Playing the Forms of Knowledge

Vincent Romagny analyses in this essay how playgrounds have changed over the years by reflecting on Friedrich Schiller’s notion of play. He traces how a new concept of playgrounds as the main public space for children began to emerge from the 1970s onwards, in parallel with a new understanding of childhood. He also examines how this juncture of art, childhood and education is articulated in a number of recent artworks: Proposal for New Dimensions(2020) by Tom and Simon Bloor, Play for Today (2021) by Céline Condorelli, and Números primos (Prime Numbers) (2003) by Esther Ferrer.
